BRmix 05/09: gray and anthracite flexible stone — two-tone masonry for modern architecture

Two-tone masonry BRmix 05/09: gray and anthracite modules with thin, discreet joints
How do you make a dark facade expressive without bright colours or elaborate decoration? BRmix 05/09 combines two models from the ROCK STONE BRICK collection: BR05 Gray Cold Rock and BR09 Volcanic Anthracite. Alternating gray and anthracite modules with thin, low-contrast joints gives a stone-mosaic effect without a busy look. Facade, plinth, entrance and interior.

How can a dark facade be made expressive without resorting to bright colors and complex decor? One approach is to use contrast within the cladding itself. The combination of gray and anthracite stone creates a surface where light and dark elements form their own architectural rhythm.

BRmix 05/09 by KORDEKO is built on exactly this principle. It combines two models from the ROCK STONE BRICK collection: Gray Cold Rock with white and black mineral granules and the nearly black Volcanic Anthracite with dark natural inclusions.

The presented texture shows an alternation of gray and anthracite modules with relatively thin, low-contrast joints. As a result, the surface is perceived as continuous stone masonry rather than a set of separate colored elements.

Two shades instead of three: why a limited palette can be more expressive

With multicolored cladding, attention is distributed among several shades. In BRmix 05/09, the composition is based on a clearer contrast: gray and almost black.

The difference between them is noticeable enough to create a lively pattern, yet both colors belong to the same cool mineral palette.

This is why the masonry looks varied while retaining visual integrity.

The lighter elements reveal the rough surface and mineral inclusions. The anthracite areas create a sense of depth and make the overall composition more contrasting.

This combination is especially interesting on large facade surfaces, where monochrome cladding can sometimes appear too monotonous.

A stone mosaic effect without a variegated pattern

The main feature of BRmix 05/09 is the ability to create variety using only two colors.

At the same time, the masonry geometry remains familiar: elongated rectangular modules are arranged in offset horizontal rows.

In the presented sample, the gray and anthracite elements form an irregular pattern. Individual dark areas sit next to lighter ones without creating a strict repeating sequence.

As a result, the surface resembles a stone mosaic while preserving the architectural order of brick masonry.

It is especially important to distribute the shades correctly on large walls. If several anthracite modules are accidentally concentrated in one area, a pronounced dark patch may appear.

Therefore, before installation, it is advisable to assess the arrangement of elements from different packages and plan the overall color balance in advance.

A modern house where the facade becomes the main accent

BRmix 05/09 is suitable for projects where the architecture is based on simple forms and expressive materials.

For example, on a modern two-story house, the mixed masonry can be used for the main facade and complemented with black window frames and large glass surfaces.

Another option is to clad only the ground floor with BRmix and finish the upper floor in white or light gray. In this case, the dark masonry will visually emphasize the base of the building.

For a country house, the combination of BRmix with natural wood is particularly interesting. The wood surface adds a warm tone that contrasts with the cool gray-anthracite palette.

We covered combining stone, brick, slate and wood on one facade in the article how to combine textures on a facade.

There is no need to use many additional materials. A combination of stone masonry, wood, and glass is already sufficient for an expressive architectural composition.

Why BRmix 05/09 is well suited for the plinth and entrance area

The lower part of a building often requires a separate architectural solution. The plinth, entrance steps, walls near the garage, and passage areas are exposed to increased moisture and dirt.

The dark color palette of BRmix makes it possible to visually separate these areas from the main facade.

Mixed masonry looks especially interesting on the plinth of a light-colored house. Anthracite elements create depth, while gray modules form a transition to the lighter walls.

BRmix can also be used to clad entrance portals, columns, and walls near the garage.

In the plinth area, however, proper waterproofing, protection against capillary moisture, and rainwater drainage must be provided. The decorative cladding itself does not replace these structural solutions.

Thin joints and color pattern: which matters more for this model?

Unlike versions with wide contrasting joints, the presented BRmix 05/09 is perceived primarily through the alternation of shades.

The boundaries of the modules remain visible but do not become the main element of the composition.

This allows attention to remain on the stone surfaces themselves: their roughness, small depressions, mineral inclusions, and the difference between gray and anthracite.

If a joint filling close in shade to the main masonry is used during installation, this effect can be preserved.

However, the final color choice should be made using a real sample. A joint that is too light can significantly change the appearance of the surface, making it more graphic and contrasting.

Two-tone masonry in the interior: an alternative to a monochrome accent wall

Indoors, BRmix 05/09 can be an interesting alternative to conventional gray or black finishes.

The mixed stone surface is suitable for modern living rooms, home offices, stair halls, and public spaces.

In a living room, it can be used on the wall behind the television. Gray elements add variety to the surface, while anthracite modules create a deeper background.

In an office or showroom, this cladding combines well with glass partitions, metal structures, and minimalist furniture.

For restaurants, BRmix makes it possible to create a restrained industrial interior without using traditional red brick.

In smaller rooms, however, it is advisable to consider the lighting and avoid overloading the space with too many dark textures.

A brick pattern in a lightweight flexible cladding format

BRmix 05/09 belongs to the ROCK STONE BRICK collection and combines the textures of BR05 Gray Cold Rock and BR09 Volcanic Anthracite.

KORDEKO Flexible Tile (PletaFlex) is produced on a mineral-polymer base with a reinforcing membrane. It makes it possible to reproduce stone masonry without the need to build an additional massive brick wall.

When installing a mixed model, it is especially important to control the even distribution of colors and the geometry of the horizontal rows.

The substrate must be strong, even, and properly prepared. For exterior work, a suitable frost-resistant adhesive must be used.

BRmix 05/09 in a facade insulation system

Gray-anthracite masonry can be used as a decorative finish in a compatible external thermal insulation system.

The general requirements for external thermal insulation composite systems (ETICS) are set out in the European assessment documents published by EOTA.

Properly installed Facade Insulation provides the required thermal protection for the walls, while BRmix creates the appearance of two-tone stone masonry.

The dark color of individual modules should be taken into account during design. Anthracite surfaces can heat up more than light ones in direct sunlight, so the system must be designed for the corresponding thermal loads.

Compatibility of adhesive and reinforcing compounds, proper substrate preparation, and high-quality execution of facade junctions are all important.

BRmix 05/09: an expressive facade without a complex color palette

This combination shows that creating a varied architectural surface does not require three, four, or five shades.

Gray Cold Rock and Volcanic Anthracite create enough contrast for the masonry to remain visually interesting even on a large facade.

At the same time, the relatively thin joints do not distract attention from the stone texture itself.

BRmix 05/09 is suitable for projects seeking strict modern architecture with natural variation while maintaining a limited gray-anthracite palette.

Frequently asked questions

How is BRmix 05/09 different from BRmix 04/05/09?
BRmix 05/09 uses only two shades of one cool palette, Gray Cold Rock and Volcanic Anthracite, with thin low-contrast joints. The composition rests on the difference between the two colours rather than on a light joint grid, so the masonry reads as more unified.
Why does BRmix 05/09 suit a plinth and an entrance?
The dark palette visually separates the lower part of the building from the main facade and looks good on the plinth of a light house. The plinth zone needs waterproofing, protection from capillary moisture and suitable adhesives.
Which joint colour should you choose for two-tone masonry?
A filler close to the shade of the masonry keeps the effect of a unified stone surface. A joint that is too light changes the character of the model considerably, so the final choice is made on a real sample.
